FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS
StreetSpeaks is an international project, which is why English was chosen. StreetSpeaks is a brand name and is not translated into other languages.
We began with Tallinn because it is the hometown of the project’s creators. More detailed information about the choice of the first filming location can be found on the ABOUT US page, on StreetSpeaksTallinn, or by clicking here.
History, with a focus on prehistory — the unwritten history — which makes sense, since it accounts for almost 100% of the history of any modern nation or country. This is the main feature distinguishing our historical website from others.
That is exactly why StreetSpeaks talks about streets: they act as mirrors reflecting our own faces, and these reflections are the result of an entirely prehistoric past hidden behind the façades — a past the residents of modern streets know very little about.
StreetSpeaks studies prehistory through paleolinguistics. You can read more about our method here.
Yes. This has been established using our paleolinguistic method. The speakers did not arrive from the east or from the Ural, but from Southern Europe. After arriving in what is now Estonia, they did not leave until modern times. Details can be found in our publications on prehistory and on the reconstruction method here.
Kaupmehe Street, which translates as Merchant Street. During the Soviet era, it was named after the revolutionary Hans Pöögelmann. Notably, the surname Pöögelmann means “mirror maker.”
There are many reasons, but the main one is that our studio is located on this street, at number 8. Therefore, choosing it as the starting point was logical.
Yes, one per street. However, each film will be divided into several episodes following a standard structure: the first episode(s) will cover prehistory (before the 13th century), then an episode(s) based on available archival materials and other written sources (mainly the 19th century and the period up to the end of WWII), and the final episode(s) will focus on modern times. At this stage, we hope people connected to the street — past or present — will actively participate.
