INFORMATION QUESTIONS

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

Why is your website named in English?

StreetSpeaks is an international project, which is why English was chosen. StreetSpeaks is a brand name and is not translated into other languages.

Why did you start with Tallinn if the website is international?

We began with Tallinn because it is the hometown of the project’s creators. More detailed information about the choice of the first filming location can be found on the ABOUT US page, on StreetSpeaksTallinn, or by clicking here.

What is the main subject of the StreetSpeaks website?

History, with a focus on prehistory — the unwritten history — which makes sense, since it accounts for almost 100% of the history of any modern nation or country. This is the main feature distinguishing our historical website from others.

If StreetSpeaks focuses mainly on prehistory, how are streets — the main subject of filming — connected to such a distant past?

That is exactly why StreetSpeaks talks about streets: they act as mirrors reflecting our own faces, and these reflections are the result of an entirely prehistoric past hidden behind the façades — a past the residents of modern streets know very little about.

What method StreetSpeaks applies to study prehistory?

StreetSpeaks studies prehistory through paleolinguistics. You can read more about our method here.

Is it true that the proto-language of modern Estonian was spoken in this region as early as the 9th millennium BCE, and that its speakers did not come from the Ural?

Yes. This has been established using our paleolinguistic method. The speakers did not arrive from the east or from the Ural, but from Southern Europe. After arriving in what is now Estonia, they did not leave until modern times. Details can be found in our publications on prehistory and on the reconstruction method here.

Which Tallinn street will be the first in the StreetSpeaks documentary series?

Kaupmehe Street, which translates as Merchant Street. During the Soviet era, it was named after the revolutionary Hans Pöögelmann. Notably, the surname Pöögelmann means “mirror maker.”

Why is it the first one?

There are many reasons, but the main one is that our studio is located on this street, at number 8. Therefore, choosing it as the starting point was logical.

Will each street in the StreetSpeaks documentary series have one film?

Yes, one per street. However, each film will be divided into several episodes following a standard structure: the first episode(s) will cover prehistory (before the 13th century), then an episode(s) based on available archival materials and other written sources (mainly the 19th century and the period up to the end of WWII), and the final episode(s) will focus on modern times. At this stage, we hope people connected to the street — past or present — will actively participate.
